ROUNDTABLE ON “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS-GOAL 16: PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSITTUTIONS” WAS ORGANIZED FOR YOUTH AND STUDENTS

Transparency Azerbaijan and US-Educated Azerbaijani Alumni Association, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), organized a roundtable on one of UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the goal of peace, justice and strong institutions. The roundtable was the latest in a series within Azerbaijan Partnership for Transparency Project designed to increase youth awareness of transparent and accountable governance.  Speakers at the session, Sevinj Samadzade and Saadat Abdullazade, independent experts, delivered an education lecture on the topic.

Youth and students from different universities attended the roundtable, which centered on importance of SDGs, youth participation within this global agenda and its impacts on building strong institutions, maintaining justice and peace. Moreover, Ms. Samadzade spoke about Goal 16, its targets involving good governance and how the theme of transparency and accountability are reflected within the entirety of 17 Goals. The youth also exchanged views on how to achieve SDGs by 2030 and exchanged views on goals and targets, which were most relevant to them.

The SDGs are a UN initiative, officially known as “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, and are comprised of an intergovernmental set of aspiration Goals with 17 goals and 169 targets. Goal 16, which is one of 17 Goals, aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

The second part of the roundtable entailed interactive discussion with the students and experts answered the questions from the students. The participants stressed the importance of organizing youth awareness events on a regular basis.
